Why I encapsulated my placenta

placenta encapsulation, postpartum care, postpartum health, postpartum recovery

Stay with me here. Before you think I am all crunchy granola hear me out. Let’s learn a little history about how this all came about. In 1578 one of the first medical and pharmaceutical experts of China, Li Shi-Zhen, included placenta as medicine in his first Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Meteria Medica. It wasn’t until the 1980’s when the tradition of placental encapsulation was brought back into light by Raven Lang, an American midwife who studied TCM. For centuries and among multiple cultures the placenta carries significant symbolism of life and spirit. Some cultures cook and eat the placenta for it’s rich nutrients.

Ok enough of the history lesson. Why is it becoming more common to encapsulate your placenta after giving birth? Because women are learning the amazing benefits it holds. When a woman gives birth, the placenta is delivered shortly after the baby. The placenta is a very vascular organ that is rich in nutrients and hormones. After giving birth a mother has an extreme hormonal shift given she is no longer pregnant which often causes what is known as postpartum depression. I could go way more in dept as far as the science side of things so to save you from a science lecture with different medical terms I will list out what women have reported feeling with taking placenta pills.

  • Higher energy levels
  • Decreased chance of baby blues
  • Decreased chance of postpartum depression
  • Balanced mood and hormones
  • Increased milk supply
  • Enhanced bonding experience with baby
  • Higher iron levels
  • Reduced postnatal bleeding
  • Uterus returning to pre-pregnancy size faster
  • Losing the baby weight faster
  • Overall faster and better recovery from having the baby

My experience with taking my encapsulated placenta was higher energy levels, overall feeling that my body wasn’t completely depleted, reduction in postnatal bleeding, insane amount of milk supply, and returning to my pre-baby size quickly.

The whole process was very simple because I worked with the most amazing company that truly goes above and beyond for their customers, Mommy Made Encapsulation (MME). I texted them after delivery and shortly after someone was there to pick up my placenta. The owner of the SoCal MME Samantha is so sweet and personable. She called to check in a few days post-delivery to see how I was doing. The handling and packaging was professional and of course cute. Tip you must tell your delivery team prior to delivery if you are planning to keep your placenta.

If you are thinking of having your placenta encapsulated, I highly recommend reaching out to MME. They can answer any questions you may have. They have 7 different locations ranging from California to Ohio and you can also ship to them.
